Former F1 driver Nico Rosberg was teammates with both Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton and said the Brit is a “more natural talent” than the German legend.

Hamilton’s victory in last years’ Driver’s Championship took him to five wins, equal with Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio.

But he’s still two behind Schumacher, who is untouched with seven Championships and stands alone.

The pair are the winningest drivers in F1 history by a long way with Schumacher winning 91 Grands Prix from 306 starts, while Hamilton has 73 wins from 229 races.

While the posturing for the title of the greatest will likely take place if Hamilton can match Schumacher, 2016 World Champion Rosberg had a hot take on where each stands.

“Lewis probably has a bit more natural talent than Michael, Lewis has one of the greatest natural talents our sport has ever seen, so he makes the difference,” Rosberg told German site Auto Motor und Sport.

“In terms of work ethic, Schumacher was something else.

“Things come very easily to Lewis naturally. Instinct, natural talent. Michael was the complete package.”

Schumacher, widely considered one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time, suffered a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in 2013.

He was placed in a medically induced coma for six months until June 2014.

His family have remained tight-lipped about his condition but according to the latest reports he is unable to walk or stand.

Rosberg was a top 10 driver for much of his career, which started with Williams before shifting to Mercedes in 2010, where he partnered Schumacher after he came out of three years of F1 retirement.

Even then Rosberg could sense the aura around the legend.

“The first thought with Michael Schumacher? A little bit scared. Can I even compete?” Rosberg said.

“Michael was a warrior. Every day after getting up, he would think: ‘How do I make my teammate small?’

“When I finally got the better of Michael, then came Lewis. At least I knew him from go-carts. He was not as alien to me as Michael.”

With the 2019 F1 season starting on the weekend, Hamilton will be chasing a move to sole possession of second on the list of Driver’s Championship victories.

The 34-year-old Brit has beefed up for the new season.

Eating a belly-full first and then doing extra hard workouts to turn that needless excess fat into muscle meant Hamilton returned to the track looking bigger than ever.

Bigger neck, bigger upper body, bigger arms.

He wasn’t the only F1 driver to relax the diets and beef-up the body after a rule change took away an advantage for being lighter.

“Over the winter and in the break, I could eat whatever I wanted, so pancakes and Cheetos, all that stuff. But I stayed very active,” Hamilton said during preseason testing.

“For the last month or so I have been pretty clean. My body fat is going down and you target more efficient defined muscle. I am not trying to be the Hulk.

“It takes time to put on muscle in the right way, but it has been great to eat bigger portions.”

Heavier drivers had complained about the previous F1 regulations, which counted the driver’s weight against the car.

All F1 races, practice and qualifying are live and on demand on Kayo Sports. Kayo has more than 50 sports for streaming from just $25 per month for two devices at once. Click here to trial it free for 14 days.

The regulations for 2019 say that a driver’s weight will be considered separately from the car. The driver and the car seat now must weigh a minimum of 80 kilograms (176 pounds).

It means teams are obligated to add ballast inside the cockpit if the driver is too light.

Hamilton, who is listed by the Mercedes website as weighing 150 pounds (68kg), said that he had added more than four pounds (2kg) of muscle through various training regimes.

“I feel stronger than I’ve been in a long time,” said Hamilton, who switched to a vegan diet two years ago.

“I worked with different people a few days on and a few days off just to pick up new technique. I worked with a vegan trainer, who has been vegan his whole life and (is) a very ripped individual, and a couple of athletes.”

Mercedes didn’t reveal the details of Hamilton’s training program but team principal Toto Wolff said the star driver is “stronger than before and in a super mental state; the best I have seen so far.”
