The allegedly drunk, unlicensed driver of a stolen car involved in a crash that killed two women in Sydney’s southwest remains under police guard in hospital.

Police allege the 21-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 4WD last night when he smashed into a Honda Jazz on Henry Lawson Drive in Peakhurst at about 8pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and passing motorists stopped to help the victims out of the car but their injuries were already too severe.

Arriving at the horror scene, emergency services found the red Toyota LandCruiser flipped on its roof and the Honda Jazz almost completely crushed.

Paramedics worked to save the female driver of the sedan, a 66-year-old woman from Queensland, and her female passenger, a 62-year-old woman from Padstow Heights, but they died at the scene.

The front-seat passenger, a 58-year-old Padstow Heights man, and a 62-year-old woman, also from Runaway Bay, seated in the back seat, were taken to St George Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

Less than half an hour after the fatal crash, the driver of the red Toyota LandCruiser, which police allege was stolen early Monday morning, was arrested nearby on Park St.

Police allege the 21-year-old man fled the scene but he was followed by a passing motorist, who stayed on the phone with triple-0 until officers could arrive.

He was arrested and taken to Kogarah Police Station where he returned a breath analysis reading of 0.166.

He was later taken to St George Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing where he remains under police guard.

Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit spent the night investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

All westbound lanes on Henry Lawson Drive were closed for more than eight hours as police investigated the crash, with all lanes reopening just before 4am today.

The Landcruiser was reported stolen from outside a home in Monterey about 2.40am Monday morning.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
